Stick #1

dormouse Stick No1 - 1st journey. The ideas for stick No1's first journey came whilst walking in Pengelli forest in West Wales. Often when the body moves the mind moves and walking often brings ideas to the fore. I imagined myself to be a Dormouse looking to travel, but wondered about ease of movement. Conversely humans have developed complex and efficient transport networks enabling us to move from one place to another, usually degrad...

I took the stick on my usual walk. I do it at least twice a week – often more. It usually takes me an hour and a half – plenty of time for thinking, if that’s what you’re into. Sometimes my random or trivial thoughts are shelved and I think about Zen koans. This doesn’t mean I’ve cracked them yet, or should I say they haven’t cracked me… yet. Walking with Pete’s stick triggered off a memory of some stick-related koans. They (and lots more) come from “Zen Flesh, Zen Bones”, published by Penguin, and compiled by Paul Reps...

don first walk Stick No 7 on its first outing with Don, stuck into very recent soil near Southwold, Suffolk on a cliff edge that probably will have already collapsed into the sea by the time that this image is posted, as the cliff edge is receding by several meters each year. image of depot near LlanberisI found 'stick 10' in Pete's Eats, a great Cafe in Llanberis North Wales. A few of us met there with the aim of walking and looking for the Llanberis Bomb Depot. I will remain anonymous, as I'm unsure if we were allowed to visit the site! After a short work from Llanberis we came across a deep hidden hole consisting of a number of open pits, linked together by tunnels. We scrambled down into a space the size of ...

Pete left Stick Number 11 with us in Crickhowell at the start of the summer - it sat in our hall all through the floods in July, on into the autumn and into winter. I don't know quite why it took us so long to take it out on a walk, since we walk most days - maybe we felt that the stick needed the whole family for its first foray. Stick Number 11 being wielded by 'the baby'Finally on the 3rd of November, we resolved to take the s...
