Stick #10

image of depot near LlanberisI found ’stick 10′ in Pete’s Eats, a great Cafe in Llanberis North Wales. A few of us met there with the aim of walking and looking for the Llanberis Bomb Depot. I will remain anonymous, as I’m unsure if we were allowed to visit the site! After a short work from Llanberis we came across a deep hidden hole consisting of a number of open pits, linked together by tunnels. We scrambled down into a space the size of a rugby pitch. The Bomb Depot was apparently built in 1939, by the Air Ministry in the disused Glynrhonwy Isaf slate quarry. Closed in 1930, now an evocative and hornting place. A sad monument to human endeavour in times of war. We explored the tunnels and caves. The acoustics were fantastic, the smallest sound echoing and bouncing around the structure. The walls are doted by military symbols and graffiti; the floors scattered with evidence of burnt out fires, beer cans and broken electrical fittings. I returned the stick back to Pete’s Eats and journeyed home through the snow. A good web site to explore the history of the site is www.subbrit.org.uk/sb-sites/sites/l/llanberis/index.shtml.marking on wall
