I found stick number 4 at Belas Knap near Cheltenham and took it on a short trip to Somerset. Burrow Mump to be precise, overlooking the quaint little, yet incredibly historic, village of Burrow Bridge.

  1. Stick 4 is now on the move, starting from Offa’s Dyke near Abergavenney. Ruby sees it off in the safe hands of Rob Fellowes and Julie Kane who are taking partin a Charity Challenge for PDSA.
Ruby is very sad not to be joining them on the two day hike because her master Jon is Crock. Still the batton is handed over. Who will it go on to?

  2. I was handed the stick on the Malvern Hills just south of the British Camp, on Sunday August 19th, by a couple I presume to be Rob & Julie. Whoever it was, they took a photo of the handover.

The stick was useful on the very wet return from the Camp car park back to Hollybush, as I started out descending to what turned out to be a very boggy Castlemorton Common. And for descending Midsummer Hill.

Stick 4 then languished at home in Cheltenham and I realised I should pass it on quickly as I would have little opportunity for walking in the next few weeks. It was taken out this morning for a local walk on Cleeve Common to Belas Knap long barrow (do hyperlinks work? - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belas_Knap). I didn’t see anyone to pass the stick on to, so I left it in the NE burial chamber entrance.

I was surprised how fresh the morning seemed compared to the last 2 days, there were still traces of dew at mid-morning. Just a first hint of autumn, perhaps. I don’t recollect much of what I was thinking on the walk, but for some reason walking with a ‘natural’ stick (vice trekking pole which I might use for more serious walks) brought to mind the eponymous hero(?) of the novel Wolf Solent by John Cowper Powys, that I very much enjoyed reading recently. He was always taking himself out for country walks with a stick.

I look forward to finding out what befalls the stick.
